SELF PUBLISH, BE HAPPY WORKSHOP

Workshop participants will be given the necessary tools and insight to become editor-in-chief of their own publication. The class will cover the varied contemporary publishing ‘models,’ from the zine to the traditional perfect-bound photography book. Editing, sequencing, and design will be discussed both theoretically and practically. The class will also cover distribution and marketing options for finished titles. Each participant will present his/her own book project to the class and then realize their project using Adobe In-Design or other publishing software. The workshop will end with the presentation of the newly designed photography books.

1st day - extended lecture + presentation individual projects

2nd day - work in group on individual project

 

Workshop led in english.

 

Material for participants to bring:

- images (digital & printed version) of the project they like to make into a book

- computer (with InDesign)

- example of what they like (books, zines, etc)

- scans of found objects if they want to include them in the book

Bruno Ceschel is a writer, curator and lecturer at the University of the Arts London.

He is the founder of Self Publish, Be Happy, an organisation that supports and promotes the work of emerging photographers. Self Publish, Be Happy has organised events at a number of institutions around the world, including The Photographer’s Gallery, ICA, Serpentine Galleries, C/O Berlin, Aperture Foundation and Kunsthal Charlottenborg amongst others. Ceschel is also the Director of SPBH Editions, which has most recently published books by Adam Broomberg and Oliver Chanarin, Cristina De Middel, Mariah Robertson and Lorenzo Vitturi.

Ceschel writes regularly for a number of publications such as FOAM, The British Journal of Photography and Aperture Magazine and has guest-edited issues of Photography and Culture, Ojo de Pez and The PhotoBook Review.

 

SELF PUBLISH, BE HAPPY Workshop

STUDIO LUMA PRESENTS A COMMERCIAL PHOTOGRAPHY WORKSHOP

During this two-day workshop, Tomasz Albin will show participants what work in top advertising agencies and clients in the Polish market looks like today. He will provide answers to the questions, “What does a week in the life of a professional photographer look like?”, “Where is the boundary between a trade and artistic work?”, “How much postproduction is there in commercial photos?” and “How do you become an advertising photographer?”

 

The workshop will include:

- a review of participants’ portfolios

- a lecture on the advertising market based on selected projects from Tomasz Albin’s portfolio, discussed with regard to CGI, social, competition and commercial campaigns, copyright, pay, working with agencies and the influence of artistic projects on one’s career

- “Light direction and modifiers”: practical exercises on the basics of directional lighting using various light modifiers, ways of measuring light and use of available light and flash

- “Dynamics and gravity” – practical workshop showing how to work with a specialist lighting system in order to freeze action.

 

Participants are requested to bring their work in digital form or as a printed portfolio.

There is a maximum of three projects (no more than eight photos per series) or 20 individual photos.

Tomasz Albin – graduate of the University of Arts in Poznań, lecturer and co-founder of the Collegium Artis educational project. He has been working as an advertising photographer for years, and is currently represented by the Shootme Warsaw agency. His work has been published in photo books including Still Life Selected Views2008 and 2009 and Luerzer’s Archive 2008 and 2009. The recipient of many awards with the Saatchi & Saatchi agency, including the Silver Drum and Silver KTR in 2010, Silver and Bronze KTR in 2009 and Bronze EPICA and Gold KTR in 2008.
